The Defence Logistics Organisation at Andover is a campus development for the Ministry of Defence consisting of offices, a technical building, an NCO Mess and crèche facilities located on almost 10 hectares of derelict airfield.
The extensive site was carefully assessed for its ecological value and steps taken to ensure that the chalk downland habitats were conserved and enhanced. Our masterplan expanded on the geometry of the architecture to link the buildings together within a structured landscape. We created a formal setting for the buildings with an entrance plaza and semi-mature tree planting defining the major spaces and highlighting major pedestrian routes. The gardens are contemporary and geometric in their design with timber decking, pools, boxed-headed trees and perennial planting. Prairie style perennial planting in an ecological parkland, around an extensive SuDS lake, provides year round colour, especially in the late summer and autumn, while also creating a varied habitat for wildlife.
We worked closely with the maintenance team over a 10 year period to develop long-term management plans for the estate wide landscape.
