Harborne Academy - Birmingham

Overview

We were appointed as part of the design team to realise Birmingham Metropolitan College’s vision to create a new Academy that provided a new and different learning environment for 800 students aged between 11 and 18 years.

The site is located on the existing three-hectare school site in Edgbaston, on the edge of the Conservation Area. Managing the design of the new school and surroundings to incorporate existing elements and facilities while allowing the normal school day to continue presented a number of challenges for the team, but careful site planning ensured a successful outcome.

Harborne Academy specialises in health and science; the brief required that the landscape and external facilities enhanced and supported this specialism. A 100m running track and upgraded MUGA were included, together with an external amphitheatre and performance space.
