National Memorial Arboretum - Alrewas

Overview

The National Memorial Arboretum (NMA), the home of the Armed Forces Memorial in Alrewas, Staffordshire has seen an impressive growth of visitor numbers since opening to the public in 2001 and is about to embark on a new phase of development. We were commissioned to prepare a masterplan to re-structure the Arboretum on its existing 150 acres and to plan for its future expansion. The site is expected to double in size and will become an exciting horticultural experience, echoing the special memorial significance of the Arboretum.

By undertaking detailed survey and analysis of the site we have been able to summarise our findings to form a robust structure and rationale for the design concept. The masterplan includes strategies for key elements of the plan including axes/focal points, circulation, vegetation, water, memorials, biodiversity and art. Finally, the design is supported by a design code to ensure continuity of design intent during the phased development.
