The masterplanning of new public realm by Fira has contributed to Edgbaston Village becoming a vibrant new destination close to Birmingham City Centre
We worked closely with the client over many years to create a more coherent and active part of the city centre. The masterplan provides the framework for a succession of refurbishment projects within the client Calthorpe Estates’ property portfolio.
Each of these developments has provided the impetus to deliver a sequence of pedestrian routes connecting into the adjoining urban fabric, and to strategic transport links, such as the recently completed Edgbaston Village stop on the West Midlands Metro line.
Other green spaces have a close relationship to new retail and fine-dining premises and the setting for community activities, such as regular artisan street markets on Greenfield Crescent. The crescent forms the heart of the village and retains the distinctive character of the Victorian townhouses that now contain offices, a sixth form college and independent retail and dining outlets.
Fira’s work included developing a vision for a multifunctional, tree lined street that makes space for pedestrians and can be temporarily closed to traffic for organised events. It also included the design of threshold spaces to each premises with opportunities for soft landscape, socialising and outdoor dining.
