From concept stage through to construction Fira developed a scheme that achieves the client‘s aspirations to create a friendly, welcoming and safe environment for students.

The Vita Student accommodation project forms part of Calthorpe Estates’ Pebble Mill redevelopment strategy, and addresses key engineering and landscape design issues in line with the Environment Agency’s strategic flood alleviation scheme for the River Rea catchment area.

The landscape proposals complement the architectural philosophy and integrate the building to the surrounding landscape. The remodelled setting provides flood protection to both the Vita Student site and local residential properties.

The external landscape design responds to the internal building uses and includes small patio spaces outside the studios, external dining within the courtyard, and break out space from the Hub. A hierarchy of spaces create the transition from the building into the more extensive parkland landscape that leads, via footbridges, towards the University of Birmingham and Pebble Mill Medical Campus.

High quality materials and a bold planting palette create a strong sense of place and a robust setting for student residents to study, relax and socialise.
