Staffordshire University Student Village (SUSV) presents an exciting opportunity to blend student living with nature though the creation of a student village in a woodland.

Recognising the value of the neighbouring Trentside Local Wildlife Site, River Trent corridor and woodland setting, the project team has put nature first in the formation of the proposed masterplan. In collaboration with the University, three landscape design themes were identified so that the diverse needs of the future student community will be met.

A place to live and thrive
Safe, friendly, equitable and inclusive environments. Active and vibrant spaces supporting outdoor study, dining, and relaxation.

A place to call home
A landscape to take ownership of and pride in. High quality external spaces that encourage students to become part of a Village community.

A place to recharge
Incorporate biophilic design principles to provide spaces that connect the students with nature. Provide both active and passive recreational opportunities.

Tree-lined lower, middle and upper lanes connect the proposed residences to the Hub building. A range of amenity spaces are established, from quiet, soft and intimate gardens to an active, multifunctional and striking Village Square. Be it catching up with reading on the Hub roof garden patio or exercising on the fitness equipment, the landscape supports students spending time outdoors. The Village is connected to the existing Campus via a bridge and boardwalk that spans the Trent and adjoining wetlands. The bridge and boardwalk will ultimately lead to a future Campus Park which has formed part of the consented planning scheme.

“This development has the potential to revitalise our campus not only by providing an excellent environment for our students, in a unique natural setting, but also by creating a new green heart to the Leek Road Site.”
