Macmillan Cancer Support focuses on improving the services and healthcare environments for those affected by cancer. We have had the privilege of working with Macmillan’s design teams to deliver high quality external spaces with a holistic approach to cancer treatment and information facilities.
Our research showed that people affected by cancer valued Macmillan’s funding to promote oncology facilities that are well designed, attractive, and which offer a beneficial effect on the healing process.
Fira followed a patient-centred approach to deliver designs based on the evidence of people’s experience of oncology environments. We focused on creating therapeutic environments that are calm, and non-institutional, reducing stress by connecting people with the natural environment. This was achieved by linking internal spaces to outside views of greenspace, providing clear wayfinding to assist orientation, and providing patients and staff with a choice of peaceful, outside spaces.
