The public setting to the Welsh home for the performing arts in Cardiff Bay. The square provides a canvas for communities to gather and express themselves
One of the UK’s top cultural attractions and home to eight resident partners, this Welsh landmark stages musicals, opera, ballet, circus, contemporary dance and major sporting events. The design of the square provides a focus for culture, and activity in the city, where the community can gather and celebrate in a cultural melting pot that allows the city to express itself. The square links the Millennium Centre to the newly formed Oval Basin to create an important public space and performance area. Works of art were commissioned and integrated into the public realm. The commission included semi-mature trees to create immediate impact, with high quality paving and a co-ordinated range of street furniture to complement the style of the architecture and the architectural detailing. The project was a culmination of several years of design and co-ordination with teams on adjacent sites.
The art strategy focused on the expression of the Welsh language on the Wales Millennium Centre, celebrating Wales and its cultural diversity in the bilingual text.
