Based on the ‘healing landscape’ concept, the scheme incorporates several large courtyard spaces that have been individually developed according to specific clinical use for optimum patient benefit and rehabilitation.
Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan is one of two hospitals in the Designed for Life: Building for Wales procurement framework, both comprise significant new build hospital developments in South Wales. Fira was commissioned to undertake the masterplanning and detailed design of the landscape and external works.
We had been previously appointed to masterplan the nearby former Corus Steelworks site so the public realm to the hospital followed the same design code. The site design was organised around the Hospital Square and clear routes and simple wayfinding facilitated access across the site, with a sensitive response to the valley setting considered throughout the design.
The design included accessible, calming outdoor spaces, with seating amongst attractive planting with seasonal variation. These spaces provide an extension of internal departments and contribute an appealing outlook from windows.
